For over 30 years, I have enjoyed being a professional seamstress. I previously
owned and operated my own sewing and alteration business, specializing in bridal
work and men's tailoring. During these years, I've sewn countless custom solutions
for customers, clients, and employers.
My husband, Captain Ron, and I have been Captain and Crew on private yachts for
seven years. Over that time we have had a lot of fun and faced many challenges
on the open sea and in port. One challenge that surprised me was how difficult it
can be to keep your linens in good order.
Regardless of make and size of the boat we were on, we repeatedly found ourselves
using standard size sheets and bed coverings, but the beds were anything but standard.
We had closet size bunks and crazy angled berths of all dimension. These odd shaped
beds fit the beautiful boat lines, but they can be a real head ache and a back ache
when the linens don't fit the bed. And those quick linen changes for incoming guests
had to be fast. After more frustration than I cared for, I decided to do something
about it.
I experimented on our own boat, making custom pillow cases and cushion covers for
our salon and bed, and day covers for our guest areas. They looked great. I then
started making sets of custom form-fitted sheets for our clients and found it not
only made it simple to keep the beds in order, they looked much better, giving their
sleeping quarters a personal and elegant "ship shape" look. Everyone loved the results.
